So the nation waits in apprehension for the results of the 2010 General Election. The odds are that we are going to have a hung parliament, probably a coalition government with David Cameron at the helm. The other alternative is that Gordon Brown strikes a deal with the Liberal Democrats and manages to cling onto the keys of number 10 for a little while longer. In any case, it looks like the Lib Dems will get what they're looking for, including perhaps a reform of the voting system to the alternative vote system. We'll see! In any case, this is probably the most confusing election we've had for years.
Last night I placed some bets for the first time. It will be fun waking up tomorrow morning finding out if I have won anything. Feels like Christmas! I bet on the Liberal Democrats snatching two target seats up in Scotland from Labour; Edinburgh South and Glasgow North. The rationale for this was that Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems have seen a surge of popularity since the TV debates, with Labour's popularity in shreds. The Lib Dems are the only reasonable contenders in these constituencies. Then I put a bet on the Tories snatching Perth and Perthshire North from the SNP (my home constituency). The candidate is Peter Lyburn, an old boy from my school in Scotland. This is also one of the only seats in Scotland that the Tories have a realistic chance of winning. And finally, for the icing on the cake, I placed the safe and sceptical bet on a hung parliament. I thought trust the polls, but you never know. According to Nick Robinson, the polls have traditionally underestimated the Tories!
So the question is, are the British people in the mood for change? Or are they not up for taking the risk ..
